UP records drop in major crimes, 93% conviction rate in a year: DGP
TNN
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Police made significant gains in crime control, convictions, cyber policing and citizen-centric governance over the past year, said DGP Rajeev Krishna. Among the key highlights were 93% conviction rate under Operation Conviction, decline in major crimes, and the rollout of AI-driven policing tools, he said.
In his first interaction with the media after becoming the state’s first permanent DGP in four years, Krishna presented the force’s performance report between May 31, 2025 and May 31, 2026, at the police headquarters in Lucknow on Monday.
He said that under the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime, courts decided 32,071 criminal cases during the year, resulting in convictions in 29,911 cases and sentencing of 42,681 accused. The convictions included 18 death penalties and 3,340 life imprisonment sentences. Police also launched extensive action against organised crime, invoking the Gangsters Act against 5,684 criminals and attaching properties worth Rs 788.38 crore.
DGP said UP recorded a decline in major crimes. “Robbery cases fell by 27.8%, thefts by 14.4%, and dacoity by 11.1%, while offences such as murder, rioting and burglary also registered reductions. Anti-mafia operations continued with properties worth more than Rs 336 crore seized, demolished or freed from illegal occupation, while 10 mafia and 20 associates were convicted through focused prosecution,” he added.
Krishna added that women’s safety remained a key focus area. “Under Mission Shakti Phase 5.0, Mission Shakti Centres were established in every police station across the state, supported by around 13,500 personnel,” he said.
More than 40,000 police personnel received specialised training on women’s safety and empowerment. According to police data, rape cases declined by 34%, kidnapping of women and girls by 17%, dowry deaths by 13%, and domestic violence cases by 10% in the months following the establishment of the centres.
In the cyber domain, UP strengthened its digital policing infrastructure by establishing a dedicated Cyber Crime Call Centre in Lucknow and expanding its capacity from 20 to 80 seats, with plans to increase it to 200. Police froze Rs 400 crore linked to cyber fraud through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, blocked 1.11 lakh mobile numbers and 1.22 lakh IMEI numbers, and achieved a 91% compliance rate under the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, the DGP said.
State police chief said technology emerged as a central pillar of policing during the year. The AI-powered Yaksh App introduced facial recognition, voice search, CrimeGPT, gang analysis and beat-level monitoring capabilities, helping police track fugitives, monitor criminals and analyse criminal networks more efficiently.
The force also focused on capacity building, training more than 60,000 newly recruited constables and over 27,000 personnel on the new criminal laws. Meanwhile, the Zero Fatality District initiative led to a 7.43% reduction in road accidents and an 11.55% decline in fatalities during the first quarter of 2026, added the DGP.
