26 arrested in Asansol over cop outpost vandalism

Asansol: The Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate has arrested 26 people in connection with brick-batting and vandalism at the Jahangiri Mohalla police outpost. Seven of the accused were remanded to police custody after being produced in court on Sunday, while 19 others were sent to judicial custody, reports Mohammad Asif."Those who were involved in vandalising the police outpost are in police custody. Not only will they face prosecution, the cost of damaging public property will be realised from them," CM Suvendu Adhikari warned on Saturday.ADCP Dhruba Das said the accused were identified through CCTV footage of the attack on the police outpost.Tension erupted on Friday at Qureshi Mohalla after rumours spread that police had ordered the removal of a mosque loudspeaker. Agitated locals ransacked the outpost, prompting police and central forces to resort to lathi-charge and tear gas shelling.
