Young & old have fun learning English at Kanayannur library
Kochi: At the 82-year-old Kanayannur Grameena Vayanashala in Chottanikkara, an English language learning programme is bringing together three generations under one roof. From schoolchildren to homemakers and senior citizens, participants are enthusiastically engaging in songs, storytelling, role play and group activities as part of the "Sweet English, Speak English" initiative led by Kanayannur-resident and a national award-winning teacher Mathew Cheriyan. The month-long programme, organised as part of the library's summer vacation activities, has drawn attention for its interactive and inclusive teaching style. Kurian Baby (75) is the oldest learner in the class, while 7-year-old Ashwajith is among the youngest. Grandparents and grandchildren, as well as parents and children, are learning together in the same classroom, creating a unique social learning environment.Speaking to TOI, Cherian said the classes were usually arranged in a circular seating format to encourage interaction and equality among learners. "Through games, storytelling, skits and conversational exercises, participants are learning English in a lively and stress-free atmosphere. Younger children and senior citizens often help each other during group tasks, making the sessions both educational and emotionally engaging," he said. The curriculum combines Whole Language Philosophy, Positive Psychology and Socio-Emotional Learning methods. Besides language training, learners are encouraged to maintain learning and gratitude journals aimed at personality development and emotional well-being."The learning is discourse-based. There are 35 participants, including those part of police force and retired employees. The sessions are based on conversations on selected themes," said Cheriyan. At the library built in 1944, president M Govindan and secretary A S Sreekumar are coordinating the programme."We are a library affiliated with the library council of Kerala and we are actively engaged with the local community in the region with at least five literary events each month. Also, we invite library members to explain a book they read each week to spread the knowledge and to inspire more individuals into learning," said Sreekumar. The classes, which began in April, are expected to conclude by May 22. Following the success of the vacation classes, the library is planning a six-month extended training programme for adults from June.
