Sea attack with high waves likely along Kerala coast
Kochi: As part of the swell surge phenomenon, a sea attack with high waves ranging from 1.2 metres to 1.5m is likely along the coasts of various districts in the state, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois) has informed.
Incois said Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyoor), Kollam (from Alappad to Edava), Alappuzha (from Chellanam to Azheekkal Jetty), Ernakulam (from Munambam fishing harbour to Maruvakkad), Thrissur (from Attupuram to Kodungallur), Malappuram (from Kadalundi Nagaram to Palappetti), Kozhikode (from Chombala fishing harbour to Ramanattukara), Kannur (from Kunchathur to Kottakkunnu) and Kasaragod districts would face the attack until 11.30pm on Thursday.
Swell surge is likely in Kanyakumari due to high waves ranging from 1.2 to 1.5 metres until 11.30pm on Friday, Incois said.
Due to the possibility of this phenomenon, fishermen and coastal residents have been advised to remain vigilant.
Since there could be severe sea turbulence, vulnerable people have been advised to relocate from danger zones as per authorities’ instructions and avoid launching small boats and vessels into the sea during this time.
Until the Incois warning is withdrawn, all activities including tourism centred around beaches should be avoided.
Authorities including Kerala State Disaster Management Authority have advised to properly moor fishing vessels along the harbour. Public are advised to completely avoid trips to the beach and sea-related recreational activities.
Residents in coastal areas have to exercise special caution due to the possibility of coastal erosion.
Cyclone delaying monsoon arrival
The onset of Southwest Monsoon in Kerala has delayed. India Meteorological Department announced May 26 as the expected arrival date of monsoon, with a model error of four days. However, it is learnt that the monsoon announcement might be delayed due to a cyclone forming in the southeastern Arabian Sea near Kerala coast. The cyclone is obstructing the westerly winds towards the Kerala coast. It is expected to weaken over the next two days.
