KASARGOD: Kerala Police have launched an investigation after Congress MLA Sandeep Varier allegedly received a death threat over the phone.
According to a complaint filed by the legislator, an unidentified caller threatened to shoot him. Following the complaint, the Chandera Police registered a case and initiated a probe into the incident, according to news agency PTI.
Police said preliminary investigations suggest that the threat may have originated from within Kerala.
However, initial findings indicate that the call was made from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
Investigators have obtained details of the phone number and call records and are examining them as part of the inquiry.
The cyber wing has also been roped in to verify the identity of the caller and ascertain the motive behind the threat.
Police said all possible angles are being explored given the seriousness of the matter. Efforts are underway to identify and trace the person responsible for the threat, they added.
Varier, a former BJP leader, quit the party in 2024 and joined the Congress.
