Telangana logs 18,139 MW power demand in first week of March
Hyderabad: The state has registered a peak power demand of 18,139 MW (megawatt) at 11.01am on Tuesday, the highest ever recorded in Telangana. The power utilities had estimated that about 18,000 MW of power demand this summer, but not in March itself. Officials said power demand was rising in the state due to hot weather conditions prevailing for the past couple of days. Officials said the highest power demand in the state was 17,162 MW in 2025, and it was 15,623 MW in 2024, which rose to 18,139 MW, almost 1,000 MW more than last year.
With a peak demand of 18,139 MW, Telangana stands comparable to larger states like Madhya Pradesh, which recorded around 19,900 MW, and Rajasthan, which registered peak demand between 19,600–20,600 MW.Deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, while congratulating the staff for uninterrupted power supply despite the power demand, said that though Telangana was smaller in geographical size and population, it proved its capacity. He said Telangana recorded higher peak demand than industrial states such as Punjab, Haryana, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.Telangana is emerging as a state with high electricity consumption density. Rapid expansion in IT, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and irrigation sectors was the primary driver of this growth, he said."This milestone reflects Telangana's economic growth, operational efficiency, and excellent coordination," he said. Despite being geographically smaller, Telangana reached a level where it matched or even surpassed the peak loads of larger states. This progress clearly indicates the rapid growth in industrial, agricultural, and urban sectors, he added."Telangana is not only meeting current demand, but is also fully prepared for summer requirements with advance planning," Vikramarka said.
