In the face of deepening crisis, chief minister

K Chandrasekhar Rao

on Tuesday reversed his government's October 2015 decision to restrict water from Singur reservoir to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of the erstwhile Medak district. But the measure may prove temporary . If the water level at Nagarjunasagar does not improve by January , the city will be in big trouble. For now, Singur is the only hope for the city.

In another few hours, Manjeera water from Singur will reach the city after travelling nearly 80 km. The areas which will get Singur water are Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Somajiguda, S R Nagar, Erragadda and Yousufguda under Operation and Maintenance Division-VI (SR Nagar), KPHB Colony , Bhagyanagar, Moosapet and Bharat Nagar under O&M Division-IX and Hafeezpet, Chandanagar, Serilingampally, Madhapur, Gachibowli, Puppalaguda and

Mani Konda

under O&M Division-XV . Till August 30, these areas got Krishna water.

Manjeera was the lifeline of the city for decades before the supplies from it was restricted to meet the needs of Medak district in October 2015. After a gap of two years, Manjeera water will again flow into the city.

Following the chief minister's directive to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to draw 90 MGD from Singur, the officials inspected the pipeline network to ensure uninterrupted supply of water.

Raw water drawn from Singur will reach Peddapur, where the water board has a 70 MGD treatment plant. After the purification process, water will be pumped to

Singapur

from where it will reach Lingampally (first source to the city).

“After going through all these processes, water from Singur may reach the city by early hours of Thursday . To meet the city's needs, we have to draw a total of 120 MGD from Singur. We have checked the water pipelines and distribution network. They are in fine condition. The water board is making all efforts to ensure Manjeera water supply to all households as per schedule (alternate days), but initially there could be some delays. From Friday , we will supply water without any problems,“ HMWS&SB chief general manager, B Vijay Kumar Reddy told TOI.

“Usually , we used to face water problem in summer. But now the crisis has hit the city eight months ahead. The water board will ensure uninterrupted Manjeera water supply till summer,“ he said.

The water board has decided to resume dredging at Puttamgandi. Earlier, it had carried out dredging work up to a kilometre from the river bed by spending `4 crore. “We are planning to begin second phase of dredging for another half kilometre at Puttamgandi. In the first phase, we went up to 470 feet depth to pump water easily with the help of emergency pumping system. Based on the present level at Akkampally, we can supply water to the city up to December,“ HMWS&SB chief general manager (transmission), B Vijay Kumar Reddy, told TOI. “We will prepare estimates and float tenders soon,“ he added.
