Bangladesh & Pakistan: Tale of two elections, and implications for India
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Tehreek-e-Insaf Pakistan (PTI) face crackdowns and have differences in their electoral strategies. Imran Khan, leader of PTI, is in jail while Nawaz Sharif, PML-N chief, enjoys military backing. PTI faces constraints and a fractious coalition government is likely. BNP in Bangladesh threatens to boycott the polls. The caretaker issue is a political crisis in both countries. The likely electoral outcomes do not pose problems for India, but post-election volatility is possible in Bangladesh. Opposition forces lack clout in Bangladesh and Pakistan to surmount electoral roadblocks.
