RND minister: Ferries safe, breakdowns due to river debris
Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant, on Friday, commissioned two new ferryboats for the Panaji-Betim route, called Salaulim and Kushavati, terming it a much-needed addition to the existing fleet.
The vessels have a capacity to carry nine cars, 150 passengers and sail at speeds of 9 knots. The ferry ramp was also enhanced to accommodate the vessels, in addition to a toilet block and shade being added at the jetty.
Speaking at the launch of the vessels, minister for river navigation Subhash Phal Dessai expressed concerns over commuters filming frequent ferry breakdowns. “When people flush toilets at home, we cannot say who may enter our homes with a camera and publish it in the newspapers. Govt has built 100% safe and good-technology ferryboats, yet breakdowns can occur. They happen only due to river debris like wood, nets and clothes entangling in the propeller during strong currents. Our endeavour, however, is to ensure that ferries move fast so that there are more passengers availing of the service,” he said.
MLA Kedar Naik said that the two ferries were a long-pending demand for the Panaji-Betim route that would benefit the people while also helping to reduce road traffic congestion. “The vessels will be available from 7am onwards daily ,” he said.
