Long-awaited Nehru Place parking project nears completion

The Delhi Development Authority’s long-pending project to decongest Nehru Place — one of the busiest commercial hubs in the capital — has finally reached its completion stage. Officials confirmed that the civil work of the new multilevel parking facility is complete, and finishing touches are now being applied. Once all tests and inspections are done, the facility is expected to open for public use by mid-December.

Final testing phase before operational launch

According to DDA officials, testing of the electricity systems and power backup units is in progress. The agency has also applied for a fire NOC, and an inspection by the fire department will be conducted soon. External finishing work, such as pathway paving, kerb stone installation, and cable laying, is expected to be completed within two weeks.

6 levels of modern infrastructure

Developed at a cost of Rs 62.4 crore, the multilevel facility spans six levels, including a basement, and is designed to handle heavy vehicular flow efficiently. The structure aims to provide a much-needed solution to Nehru Place’s persistent parking woes.

4/11

Parking capacity for over 1,000 vehicles

The new parking facility is designed to handle 660 cars and 352 two-wheelers, offering a significant boost to Nehru Place’s limited parking capacity. Out of these, 56 car slots have been specially reserved for persons with disabilities, reflecting DDA’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Once operational, this facility is expected to reduce illegal roadside parking, a common cause of traffic congestion in the area.

5/11

Smart parking systems for smooth operations

The multilevel complex comes equipped with modern automated systems to make parking safer and more efficient. These include automated ticketing, LED lighting, CCTV surveillance, and advanced firefighting systems. Additionally, electric vehicle (EV) charging points have been installed to encourage the use of green mobility solutions. The building also houses elevators and lifts for easy movement of people between different levels, especially benefiting senior citizens and differently abled visitors.

6/11

Designed for safety and accessibility

The DDA has incorporated several design features to ensure barrier-free access throughout the facility. Pedestrian pathways and ramps have been built to make movement smooth for all users. Moreover, the entire structure has been designed to be earthquake-resistant, taking into account the seismic risk zones that Delhi falls under. Officials said the safety protocols and structural reinforcements have been tested to meet national standards for public infrastructure resilience. (AI Image)

A step toward solving Nehru Place’s traffic nightmare

For years, Nehru Place has been plagued by chaotic and haphazard parking spilling over onto roads, footpaths, and public spaces. Thousands of vehicles enter the area daily, belonging to office-goers, IT professionals, shoppers, and visitors to eateries and showrooms. The new facility is expected to streamline parking operations, declutter roads, and reduce congestion, especially during peak hours. DDA officials said this move will help restore smoother traffic movement in the surrounding areas, including the Ring Road stretch and the Nehru Place Metro station zone. (AI Image)

Green and sustainable design principles

Beyond convenience, the project emphasizes eco-friendly and sustainable design principles. DDA implemented tree transplantation and compensatory plantation drives during the construction phase to offset any environmental impact. The complex includes two rainwater harvesting systems, ensuring effective water conservation and reducing surface runoff that could lead to waterlogging during monsoon months. Officials said these features make the project one of DDA’s most environmentally conscious developments to date. (AI Image)

Built with sustainability at its core

The project follows DDA’s eco-friendly construction model, with measures for water conservation and environmental protection. Two rainwater harvesting systems have been installed, and tree transplantation and compensatory plantation were undertaken during construction. (AI Image)

Vertical garden and urban beautification drive

Once civil work concludes, DDA plans to develop a 400-square-metre vertical garden on one of the outer walls of the parking structure. The lush green wall will not only enhance the area’s appearance but also contribute to reducing heat absorption and improving air quality. Alongside this, the authority is undertaking painting, landscaping, and lighting projects around the site to integrate the new facility seamlessly into the cityscape. (AI Image)

Step towards smarter, sustainable Delhi

Officials said the project is part of DDA’s broader vision to modernize urban infrastructure and promote sustainability. The multilevel parking complex at Nehru Place represents a major step toward efficient urban mobility, environmental responsibility, and improved city aesthetics.
