Plea filed in Madras HC against allowing non-veg feast on Thiruparankundram hill

MADURAI: Madras high court on Friday sought a response from Madurai district administration officials, city police, and Sikandar Badusha Dargah administration on a plea seeking a direction to the authorities not to permit ‘kandoori’ during the Santhanakoodu festival of the dargah on Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai district. The petition said animal sacrifice and serving of non-vegetarian food are part of kandoori.

Justice M Jothiraman sought a response from the authorities and dargah management while hearing the petition filed by M Manickamoorthy. The petitioner said he is a devotee of Lord Murugan who visits the Subramaniya Swamy temple in Thiruparankundram.


He said in Dec 2024, the Sikandar Badusha Dargah management made arrangements for performing kandoori in the hill. However, Madras HC, while hearing a batch of public interest litigations, held that animal sacrifice could not be permitted on the hill until the dargah management established such a practice by approaching the civil court.

Despite that order, the dargah management has now put up notices and wall posters announcing they were going to perform kandoori during Santhanakoodu festival celebration from Dec 12 to Jan 6, which necessitated the present petition, he said. The hearing in the case has been adjourned to Jan 2.
