KARUR: A man and his
son
, who had moved the
Madras high court to retrieve an encroached
lake
, was hacked to death by a gang at Mudhaliapatti in
Karur
district of
Tamil Nadu on Monday.
The murdered have been identified as Veeramalai alias Ramar, 60, of Mudhalaipatti village and his son, Nallathambi alias Vaandu, 40.
According to police sources, the gang barged into Ramar’s house around 8am and attacked him with lethal weapons, killing him on the spot. The gang that could not find Ramar’s son in the house began to search for him.
Later, the gang saw Vaandu riding a two-wheeler near a tank in the village. The gang members intercepted him and hacked him to death before fleeing the scene.
Trichy range deputy inspector general of police V Balakrishnan, Karur superintendent of police R Pandiarajan visited the village. The Kulithalai police began investigations.
A senior police officer said the murder could be the fallout of a row over the encroachment of several acres of a lake by a group of people in the village. The encroachers had been converting the lake into an agricultural land, the father-son duo had alleged.
However, the police were yet to reach a conclusion on the real motive of the double murder.
