Four PG civil engineering courses at Chennai college witness 100% placement this year

All nine students from ME structural engineering who sat for campus placements were placed, as were eight students each from ME construction engineering and ME environmental engineering, and six students from ME environmental management. Students have received pay packages from 4 lakh to 22 lakhs a year from companies, such VA Tech Wabag, Fichtner Consulting Engineers (India) Private Limited, L&T, and Sonne Infrastructure.

“The demand for core engineers has increased this year. We are also upskilling students with various industry-oriented courses,” Anna University registrar (in-charge) V Kumaresan said, explaining what may have attributed to the success. The university has signed MoUs with companies such as Nemetschek and Bentley to offer courses in building information modelling (BIM), urban flood modelling, among others. “Internships are also helping both UG and PG students to secure more job offers,” added S Kanmani, head, department of civil engineering, CEG.

In UG, of the 136 students who graduated from BE civil engineering, BE civil engineering (Tamil medium) and BE geoinformatics, 67 opted for placements. Of them, 54 have been placed (81%) so far. “In civil engineering, 40% students opted for govt jobs while 5% wanted to pursue higher studies and another 5% entrepreneurship,” Kanmani said.

“As the country invests heavily in infrastructure modernisation, climate resilience, urban development, transport networks, renewable energy and smart cities, the need for civil engineers increases. The investment in intelligent infrastructure systems also created demand for engineers skilled in BIM, geographic information systems (GIS), Internet of Things (IoT) and digital twin platforms,” placement coordinators from the department said. Digital twins, virtual replicas of physical infrastructure assets, are increasingly being used to manage bridges, highways, rail systems and airports.

In the coming academic year, the department is planning to teach artificial intelligence along with BIM, renewable energy and 3D printing as industry-oriented courses to both UG and PG students. “These courses will improve the campus placement for civil engineering students,” said K Shanmuga Sundaram, director, Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC), Anna University.
