Congress MPs flay BJP over rising debt on Haryana farmers
Chandigarh: Intensifying the attack on the Narendra Modi-led Centre and the Nayab Saini-led govt in Haryana, Congress MPs on Sunday flayed the two dispensations over the issue of increasing debt burden on Haryana farmers.Lok Sabha MP from Sirsa and former Union minister Selja and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala claimed that due to the policies of the BJP govt, the farmers in Haryana were increasingly sinking into a debt trap.
Selja said the official figures confirmed that the average debt per farmer family in Haryana crossed Rs 1.83 lakh. Referring to information provided in Parliament by Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and a written reply submitted in the Haryana assembly by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, she said, as of Sept 30, 2025, a total of Rs 60,816 crore was outstanding against 25,67,467 farmers in the state.Surjewala on the other hand said under the BJP's double-engine governance, input costs in agriculture consistently increased, farmers were not receiving the full benefits of the minimum support price (MSP), adequate compensation was not being provided during natural disasters, and landless farmers remained in a highly vulnerable condition."These circumstances have turned farming from a profitable occupation into a source of distress," said Surjewala, adding that farmers and youth were the real strength of Haryana, but current govt policies pushed the farmers deeper into debt while driving the youngsters towards unemployment, substance abuse, and migration. Both Selja and Surjewala demanded that the state govt formulate a concrete farm debt relief plan, ensure effective MSP for all crops, provide time-bound compensation in cases of natural disasters, and announce a special package for small and landless farmers.Selja said the Congress party would continue to fight for the rights and interests of the farmers and youth.MSID:: 128384653 413 |
