Patiala: The headless body of a boy was found in the Bhakra canal near Kakrala village in Patiala district on Tuesday evening.
The body was spotted drifting in the water, prompting a recovery operation by local divers. "Due to its condition, we initially suspected it was an animal carcass. The sight shocked everyone once we pulled it out and realised it was a child," said Shankar, one of the divers.
Police said the child, estimated to be around seven or eight years old, has not been identified, and a probe has been launched. Police are also reviewing missing persons' reports from Patiala and neighbouring districts.
While the divers said there were deep wounds and organs visible, raising doubts that a sharp-edged weapon could have been involved, police refused to rush to conclusions.
"It is not clear whether the injuries were inflicted before death or caused while the body was floating in the canal. The exact circumstances will become clear after the post-mortem," said inspector Gurpreet Singh, SHO of Passiana.
