Bareilly: A 45-year-old patient died late Friday night after falling from the second floor of Lokpriya Hospital on Garh Road in Meerut. His family members have accused the hospital staff of deliberately pushing him, said police on Saturday.
Sanjay Chaudhary, a resident of Jail Chungi area, was admitted to the hospital's ICU on Wednesday with critically low haemoglobin levels. Sanjay was administered three units of blood under the supervision of Dr PK Shukla over three days and was reportedly stable on Friday.
Sanjay's wife, Jyoti Chaudhary, alleged that the hospital staff pushed Sanjay from the ICU's bathroom window, adding that her husband had no reason to use the bathroom as he had a urine bag attached. Jyoti also accused the staff of negligence for not monitoring the patient.
Hospital authorities, however, said that it was a case of suicide. Night duty in-charge Dr Rajiv said the patient went to the bathroom accompanied by the staff, but locked the door from inside. Sanjay allegedly broke the windowpane and jumped before staff could intervene, he added.
Following Sanjay's death, his relatives, including his brother-in-law, Pradeep Chaudhary, allegedly created a ruckus inside the hospital and vandalised glass panes and other property. Police were informed and brought the situation under control.
Circle officer (Civil Lines) Abhishek Tiwari said that Sanjay died due to injuries sustained from the fall. "Both the family's allegations and the hospital's version are being investigated. CCTV footage from the hospital and nearby areas is being examined," he said.
