The firing took place around 11.30pm. The injured IPS trainee was identified as Kanwale Gopinath, who is recuperating at JLN Hospital. The accused - Danish (23) and Shajad (33), both residents of Haridwar, Uttarakhand - were being interrogated over their suspected involvement in planning a major criminal conspiracy in Ajmer, SP Devendra Kumar Bishnoi said Wednesday.

Ernakulam Police had tracked the mobile location of the suspects and traced them to Ajmer, and informed Ajmer Police, who found that the duo was staying at Kamani Gate area. "When Kerala Police came, we provided them additional forces to arrest the accused," the SP said.

When the suspects were about to be apprehended, they opened fire at the joint police team. "They fired three rounds and trainee IPS Kanwale was injured," said a cop. After a half-hour struggle, police finally arrested the two men and seized two pistols and seven bullets.
