Gujarat GST collections up 16% in May, outpaces national growth
Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s goods and services tax (GST) collections grew by 16% year-on-year in May, outpacing the national growth rate of 3.2%, reflecting sustained economic activity and improved tax compliance in the state.
According to data released by the state tax department on Monday, Gujarat collected Rs 7,262 crore under GST in May, compared with Rs 6,267 crore in the corresponding month last year, registering an increase of Rs 995 crore.
The strong GST performance comes amid signs of continued momentum across key sectors such as manufacturing, trade and services, which form the backbone of Gujarat’s economy.
Apart from GST, the state earned Rs 2,717 crore through value-added tax (VAT), Rs 998 crore from electricity duty and Rs 22 crore under professional tax during the month.
The state’s total revenue from GST, VAT, electricity duty and professional tax stood at Rs 10,998 crore in May.
Officials said the higher collections reflect both economic activity and continued efforts by the tax administration to improve compliance and plug revenue leakages.
