Ahmedabad: Jewellery shop employee held for 280g gold theft
Ahmedabad: The city crime branch on Sunday arrested a 30-year-old employee of a jewellery shop in Manek Chowk for allegedly stealing around 280 grams of gold worth Rs 42.1 lakh over six months.
According to police, a complaint was registered with Khadia police stating that an employee had allegedly siphoned off small quantities of gold from nearly 25 pieces of jewellery at the shop. Investigators said the accused allegedly removed small amounts of gold at different times, eventually accumulating nearly 280 grams of fine gold before vanishing.
Following the complaint, crime branch teams launched an investigation and developed leads through human intelligence sources. During the probe, police traced the accused, a resident of Amraiwadi, who was allegedly attempting to dispose of the stolen gold after converting it into gold bars.
Police apprehended the accused and recovered five gold bars weighing a total of 280 grams. The recovered gold has an estimated market value of Rs 42.1 lakh, officials said.
Investigators believe the accused had systematically stolen small quantities of gold from the shop over several months to avoid detection. The entire stolen property has been recovered, police said.
A case has been registered at Khadia police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused has been handed over to Khadia police for further investigation.
