Agra: A 25-year-old woman and her 19-year-old lover were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly murdering her 55-year-old mother-in-law in Bhankarpur Basela village under Raya police station of Mathura district.
Police said the incident took place in the early hours of March 3 when the elderly woman allegedly caught the accused in a compromising position. An altercation followed, during which the duo allegedly suffocated her with a pillow.
The deceased's husband, who was away with his son at the time, initially believed his wife had died of a heart attack after being informed by his daughter-in-law. The family buried the body but suspecting foul play, he lodged a police complaint. He told police that his daughter-in-law had developed a relationship with a neighbour and that the two continued to meet despite objections from the family.
On Tuesday, the body was exhumed on the orders of the district magistrate and a postmortem revealed death due to asphyxiation and a fractured neck bone, confirming it as a case of murder.
Mathura SSP Shlok Kumar said a case was registered at Raya police station under section 103(1) (murder) of BNS and further legal proceedings are underway.
