Stock market today: Nifty50 ends below 26,150; BSE Sensex down over 100 points

Stock market today: Nifty50 and Sensex, the Indian equity benchmarks, closed lower for the third straight session on Wednesday, pressured by rising geopolitical tensions and renewed worries over possible US tariff increases, which kept investor sentiment cautious. Persistent selling by foreign investors added to the weakness in the markets.The BSE Sensex fell 102.20 points, or 0.12 per cent, to end at 84,961.14, after slipping as much as 445.85 points, or 0.52 per cent, during the day to 84,617.49. The NSE Nifty declined 37.95 points, or 0.14 per cent, to close at 26,140.75.Shares of Maruti, Power Grid, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, HDFC Bank, Asian Paints and Tata Steel weighed the most on the Sensex. In contrast, Titan, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services provided some support."Indian equity markets ended today’s session on a subdued and cautious note, with investors adopting a selective approach amid mixed domestic and global cues. Elevated geopolitical tensions and renewed tariff-related concerns continued to cap risk appetite and deter aggressive positioning," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm.
Market data showed that foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 107.63 crore on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors were net buyers to the tune of Rs 1,749.35 crore."Domestic market sentiment remains cautious with risk-off undertones ahead of Q3 FY26 earnings and key US jobs data. While QoQ corporate earnings are expected to improve, FIIs remain risk-averse amid global trade uncertainty," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited.Across Asia, South Korea’s Kospi and China’s Shanghai SSE Composite ended higher, whereas Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed in the red. European markets were trading mostly lower during the session, while US equities ended higher on Tuesday.Meanwhile, Brent crude oil slipped 0.81 per cent to USD 60.21 per barrel.
