Satellite calling! New car feature you didn’t know you needed
Anyone who has driven on long stretches of highways knows this feeling. You are cruising smoothly and suddenly the mobile network disappears. No signal. No data. No way to call for help. This is common on hill roads, remote stretches, parts of Ladakh or even certain expressways where coverage drops without warning.
A new technology showcased at MWC Barcelona 2026 could change that. HARMAN has partnered with Viasat to introduce in-cabin voice calling using satellite connectivity.
In simple terms, your car will be able to make voice calls even when there is no mobile network. The system uses satellite communication as a backup to traditional 4G and 5G connectivity. So when cellular coverage drops, the car can switch to satellite for essential communication.
It may not be something drivers think about while buying a car today. But the next time the network bars disappear, this is exactly the kind of feature that could make a difference.
This can be especially important in India. Many long-distance drives pass through areas with weak or no signal. Think about a breakdown on a remote highway late at night. Or a medical emergency on a hill station road. In such moments, not being able to make a call can become a serious safety concern.
The new setup combines HARMAN’s Ready Connect TCU with Viasat’s Mobile Satellite Services satellite network. The hardware supports 4G, 5G and Narrowband Non-Terrestrial Network satellite connectivity using the same base solution. Viasat acts as the Satellite Network Operator and provides access to its satellite network along with licensed global spectrum rights.
The focus right now is on low data-rate, safety-relevant communication. This means drivers and passengers can call emergency services, roadside assistance or even family members in urgent situations. It is not meant to replace mobile networks. It works alongside them.
There is more planned beyond voice calling. The partnership also supports messaging, emergency SOS features and telematics functions through satellite connectivity. This could enable services like remote vehicle operation, stolen vehicle tracking and remote diagnostics even in areas where cellular coverage is unreliable.
