2024 United Kingdom elections: Who is Keir Starmer? Britain's next prime minister
Labour has already secured more than 326 out of the 650 seats in parliament, and an exit poll indicates that the party is likely to win around 410 seats in total. After retaining his seat in north London, the 61-year-old Starmer addressed his constituents, saying, "The change begins right here because this is your democracy, your community and your future. You have voted and now it is time for us to deliver."
Despite Starmer's decisive win, polls suggest that there is a lack of enthusiasm among the public for both him and his party. As he assumes power, he faces a multitude of formidable challenges that the country is currently grappling with.
Keir Starmer often tells voters during his campaign that he comes from a very humble background, his father was a toolmaker and his mom was a nurse.
The Labour party candidate claims that he was raised in a cramped, pebbledashed semi-detached house on the outskirts of London.
Starmer had taken violin lessons at school with Norman Cook who went on to become DJ Fatboy Slim as well as attended a prestigious music school in London.
Starmer was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014 but he rarely ever uses the prefix “Sir”.
Keir Starmer is friends with fellow human rights lawyer Amal Clooney from their time when they practiced law together and her husband George Clooney.
Starmer jokingly claims that his parents were animal lovers who rescued donkeys and that whenever any of the siblings left home they would simply be replaced by a donkey and not be missed.
Sunak's rival in a recent speech has reiterated that for him his nation comes before his party and that politics has to be about service.
Starmer broke down in tears during a TV interview in 2021 while describing how his mother's death broke his father. His mother died of a rare disease of the joints that had left her unable to walk for many years.
Starmer during his campaign has said that he loves his family very much and if elected he will not work past 6 pm on Fridays to spend time with them. Starmer’s wife Victoria is an occupational therapist and the couple has two children.
Starmer joined a rebellion by Labour lawmakers just a year after becoming an MP, over radical left-winger Jeremy Corbyn's perceived lack of leadership during the EU referendum campaign.
