World's most expensive cities in 2023

​Zurich surpassed New York to become the world’s most expensive city to live in 2023, according to a new global survey.

​

​The sky-high cost of car ownership, expensive alcohol and spiralling grocery prices saw Singapore pull ahead of the US city, with which it shared the top spot last year.

​

New York City in the United States is the third costliest place in the world to live in 2023.

Geneva is a Swiss city noted for its high cost of living. The city has several international organisations’ headquarters, and the residents often earn high salaries, all contributing to a high cost of living.

​Hong Kong rounded out the list of the top five costliest places. The cost of living is one of the prime factors that make it one of the most expensive places to live. Eating and transportation here are also costly.

Los Angeles in the United States is the sixth costliest city in the world. Notably, the ranking is made in dollars and converts other currencies to the greenback accordingly.

Paris, also noted for its high cost of living, stood seventh in the list. The city is an international destination and the Eiffel Tower here is one of the most-visited attractions in the world.

While Israel’s Tel Aviv made the top 10, the survey was carried out before the Israel-Hamas war, which may have affected prices. The city stood eighth on the list.

Copenhagen is Denmark's capital and is beautiful. But living in this colourful city comes with a high cost of living, mostly in terms of housing.

​San Francisco (10th) is the only other US city to make the top 10 in the most costliest cities list.
