A weak but grateful Pope

Sitting in a wheelchair, Pope Francis greeted hundreds of onlookers below, expressing gratitude for their support during his hospitalization. Though visibly frail and tired, his voice carried sincerity and appreciation as he made eye contact with the crowd.

2/7

A moment of connection with the faithful

As he sat on the balcony, Pope Francis recognized a woman in the crowd holding yellow flowers, a simple but significant moment that captured his deep connection with the faithful. His acknowledgment of the flowers, paired with his gentle smile, reminded the crowd of his personal touch and ability to engage with people despite his condition.

Departure from the Hospital

After more than five weeks of treatment, Pope Francis left the Gemelli hospital in a car, visibly thinner and still receiving oxygen, but stable enough for discharge. Though he remained behind closed windows, he waved to the gathered media and faithful, signalling that he was well on his way to recovery.

4/7

Exercising authority from afar

Despite being bedridden, Pope Francis has continued to exercise full authority over the Catholic Church, appointing bishops and approving important reforms. Throughout his hospitalization, the Pope’s leadership remained uninterrupted as Vatican cardinals and other officials handled in-person duties on his behalf.

5/7

A Pope who embraces his humanity

Pope Francis has been remarkably open about his health struggles, including both physical ailments and mental health challenges, showcasing his humanity in a way few public figures would. He even invited a doctor to write a book about the health of popes, a gesture that allowed the public to see him as a person, not just a figure of power.

6/7

Jesuit values of humility and strength

Rooted in Jesuit traditions, Pope Francis’ approach to leadership blends humility with strength, reflecting the belief that true power comes from self-awareness and service to others. He is not afraid to show weakness, believing that acknowledging one’s frailty is essential to exercising true authority.

7/7

Pope Francis: a power in absentia

Even as Pope Francis recovers from his illness, his absence from public life has not diminished his authority. While his physical presence may be limited, his decisions and influence continue to shape the Catholic Church’s direction.
