​Pope Francis leaves hospital after 5-week recovery, thanks faithful in first public appearance

Sitting in a wheelchair, Pope Francis greeted hundreds of onlookers below, expressing gratitude for their support during his hospitalization. Though visibly frail and tired, his voice carried sincerity and appreciation as he made eye contact with the crowd.

As he sat on the balcony, Pope Francis recognized a woman in the crowd holding yellow flowers, a simple but significant moment that captured his deep connection with the faithful. After more than five weeks of treatment, Pope Francis left the Gemelli hospital in a car, visibly thinner and still receiving oxygen, but stable enough for discharge. Despite being bedridden, Pope Francis has continued to exercise full authority over the Catholic Church, appointing bishops and approving important reforms. Throughout his hospitalization, the Pope’s leadership remained uninterrupted as Vatican cardinals and other officials handled in-person duties on his behalf.
