After Trump’s China visit, Xi accepts invitation for US state visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the United States later this year at the invitation of US President Donald Trump. The announcement was made on Friday by China’s top diplomat Wang Yi following talks between Trump and Xi in the Chinese capital. According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Xi will make a state visit to the US in the autumn, with both sides expected to prepare for further high-level exchanges aimed at building “more outcomes” from the relationship.



The development comes after three days of meetings in Beijing dominated by discussions over Taiwan, trade and the conflict involving Iran. While Trump largely avoided public remarks during the visit itself, he spoke more openly aboard Air Force One on his journey home, particularly on the issue of Taiwan.

Xi reportedly warned that mishandling Taiwan could push Washington and Beijing towards confrontation. Trump did not publicly challenge China’s position while in Beijing and later suggested he may reconsider aspects of a previously approved US weapons package for Taiwan after hearing Xi’s objections. The Trump administration had earlier cleared billions of dollars in military support for Taipei, though some measures still require congressional approval.

Despite longstanding tensions, both sides appeared eager to project a more cooperative tone. China said the leaders had agreed on a framework for a “constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability”, intended to guide ties through the remainder of Trump’s term. Analysts viewed the language as an attempt to move away from the sharper rivalry that defined much of recent US-China relations.

Trade was also high on the agenda, though no major agreements were formally announced during the visit. Trump claimed significant commercial deals were in the pipeline, including potential Boeing aircraft sales to China, while Chinese officials said new trade and investment mechanisms would be established to address tariff and market access issues.

Throughout the trip, Trump repeatedly praised Xi, calling him a “great leader” and saying the two countries could have a “fantastic future together”. Xi responded in more restrained fashion but said Trump’s visit had helped deepen mutual trust between the two powers ahead of his planned trip to Washington later this year.
