‘Doona!’ star Yang Se Jong in discussions to play the lead in webtoon-inspired drama 'The Hooligans'

Acclaimed actor Yang Se Jong, celebrated for his remarkable performances in ‘Doona!’ and 'Thirty but Seventeen’, is reportedly poised to take on a lead role in the upcoming webtoon-based drama, ‘The Hooligans’. With a stellar career that catapulted him into the limelight through his role as a young chef in the 2017 romance drama ‘Temperature of Love’, Yang Se Jong has become a prominent figure in the South Korean entertainment industry.

According to reports from SPOTV News on December 15, Yang Se Jong is in discussions to headline ‘The Hooligans’, a forthcoming drama directed by Kang Yun Sung, known for his work on ‘The Outlaws’ and ‘Big Bet’. The series, also known as Fine, draws inspiration from the popular Kakao webtoon that gained prominence from 2014 to 2015. ‘The Hooligans’ is set to make its debut on OTT platforms, with production gearing up and filming anticipated to commence in the second half of 2023. The drama is slated for release in the second half of 2024.

‘The Hooligans’ unfolds a captivating narrative of individuals seeking an escape from poverty by engaging in treasure excavation, steering away from a life entangled with counterfeit goods. Set against the backdrop of the 1970s, the story revolves around an uncle and his nephew lured by the prospect of treasure hunting in the West Sea.

Initially, Ji Chang Wook and Ryu Seung Ryong were considered for roles in the series, with Ji Chang Wook set to portray Hee Dong, a character embarking on various odd jobs alongside his uncle Gwan Seok (played by Ryu Seung Ryong). However, recent reports confirm that Ji Chang Wook has currently declined the role.

Yang Se Jong's potential involvement in ‘The Hooligans’ follows his recent appearance in the hit romance drama ‘Doona!’, where he portrayed Lee Won Jun.
