Binged on 'Squid Game'? 6 shows and movies to watch next

The K-drama, 'Squid Game' has captivated audiences worldwide with its mix of high-stakes thrills with social commentary, gore and moral dilemmas. The show created history by becoming the first Korean series to take the No. 1 spot as the most-watched series in the US. For those who have already binge-watched on series and are looking for some shows and films with serious gore, we've got you covered.

2/7

As the Gods Will

'As the Gods Will' is a name that would have popped up along with all those 'Squid Game' tweets, considering that the new show was accused of ripping off scenes from the 2014 Japanese supernatural horror film. Based on a manga series of the same name, the film centres around high school student Shun Takahata, who laments to the gods about being bored in class. This in turn results in a deadly series of twisted childhood games. Based off the trailer, this horror film may be even more bloody and gruesome than the new hit series.

3/7

Battle Royale

Meet the OG of dystopian survival competition dramas - 'Battle Royale'. This cult-classic Japanese film is set in a future where the government captures a group of 9th grade students and forces them to kill each other in a competition that can only be described as 'twisted'. This film was based on the mega-hit YA series that also inspired, 'The Hunger Games'.

4/7

The Hunger Games

For those wondering how the youth had the stomach for 'Squid Game', it would probably be because they grew up watching 'The Hunger Games' series. The 2012 Hollywood science fiction dystopian adventure is based on a book series and sees children and teens of the 12 districts of Panem being offered as 'tribute' for an annual game where they must fight to the death.

5/7

3%

It's a crazy world out there and nothing does it better than this dystopian show from Brazil titled '3%'. Set in Sao Paulo, the show sees 20-year-old residents of an impoverished Inland compete to be admitted into a utopian society. Their only way in is through 'The Process', which is a deadly series of tests where, as the title suggests, only 3% of participants make it out alive.

Where to watch: Netflix

6/7

Most Dangerous Game

The 2020 American action series, 'Most Dangerous Game' also has elements of gore, social commentary, high-stakes thrills that made 'Squid Game' a global phenomenon. Based on a short story of the same name, the series follows a man burdened by financial woes and personal tragedy to participate in a hunting game for a huge cash prize.

Where to watch: Amazon Prime

7/7

The Purge

If it was the realistic aspect of Squid Game that sent chills down your spine, then 'The Purge' is the horror series for you. Set in the near future, the film anthology and its hugely successful web series is a horror drama about a US annual national holiday in which all crime, including murder, becomes legal for a 12-hour period.
