Fascinating facts about Panchayat's ‘Phulera’ village

If you are a fan of ‘Panchayat’, you have likely finished binge-watching the latest Season 4 by now. The show has captured hearts due to its authentic portrayal of village life and grassroots issues. Interestingly, the fictional Phulera village is actually filmed in Mahodiya village, located in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh. What makes this even more fascinating is that many of the props and locations used in the series are not mere sets but real places, often more developed than their on-screen versions. Let’s delve into some intriguing facts about the real-life locations and the differences between reel and reality, based on a video by YouTuber Jenil Variya.

The Panchayat office colour: Yellow in reel, Pink in real

In the show, the Panchayat office is painted a dull yellow, reflecting the underdeveloped vibe of the village administration. However, in real life, the office is indeed painted pink currently, but the production team plans to paint it yellow during shooting. After filming, they ensure the paint is restored to its original colour. This attention to detail shows the effort to maintain the authenticity of the location while adapting it for cinematic needs.

Panchayat office rent: A modest Rs 500 per day

The heart of the series, the Panchayat office, is actually the gram panchayat office of Mahodiya village. According to video, the production team rented this office for just Rs 500 per day. The lead character, Sachiv Ji, played by Jitendra Kumar, works from an existing guest room in this office.

4/6

Modern infrastructure behind the scenes

On screen, the Panchayat office looks quite basic and underdeveloped, often shown under dull lighting to emphasise the rustic environment. However, in reality, the office is well-equipped with modern facilities and infrastructure. This contrast between reel and real life underlines the creative choices made to depict the challenges faced by rural administration, even though the actual office is more advanced than portrayed.

Pradhan Ji’s house: Reel and real interiors match closely

The interiors of Pradhan Ji’s house in the series closely mirror the real house in Mahodiya village. From the veranda where the family gathers to the terrace where Rinky secretly chats with Sachiv Ji on the phone, the sets are faithful recreations of the real location. The only noticeable difference is the main front door, which is larger in real life but made to look smaller and more old-fashioned on screen, enhancing the rustic aesthetic.

6/6

What exists only on screen: The memorial library and handpump

While many elements are real, some are purely fictional or temporary additions. For instance, the memorial library dedicated to the village martyr Rahul Pandey, introduced in Season 3, was not originally part of the village. Conversely, the handpump near the Panchayat office, frequently used by Sachiv Ji in the show, is a prop installed solely for filming and removed once shooting concluded.
