King Aegon Targaryen II, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, quickly became one of the most unlikeable characters in the hit series 'House of the Dragon'. The events of the last two episodes have seemingly changed the tide for the young king and his chances of ever ruling the seven Kingdoms, keeping in mind his near-death experience at the Battle at Rook's Rest that left him bedridden with burns and broken bones.
As depicted in episode 6, Aegon's prospects as protector of the realm, appear grim, with his survival depending on whether or not he remembers which dragon rained fire down on him. It must be noted that while Aemond's portrayal in the series diverges from the books, which suggests that he never attempted to kill his brother. The TV adaptation implies that he might have his sights set on the throne.
According to reports, George RR Martin’s 'Fire & Blood' novel reveals that Aegon's story is far from over. The book confirms that he will eventually walk again and although his recovery will be slow, he will manage to flee King’s Landing, and head to Dragonstone before Rhaenyra takes over the throne.
It is not long before she is captured and killed when Aegon orders his dragon to blast his sister with fire.
It is during this time that Helaena dies by suicide in King’s Landing, and Aemond meets his end duelling Daemon Targaryen in the Battle Above the Gods Eye.
On his return to King’s Landing, Aegon will never really sit on the Iron Throne due to his injuries. As the late Queen's forces of Team Black surround the city to avenge her death, Aegon is poisoned by his own men. The book hints that Aegon's wine is poisoned, with the conspirators including Corlys Velaryon, Larys Strong, Ser Perkin the Flea, and other members of Team Green.
With no sons or brothers to succeed him, he is followed by Rhaenyra’s surviving son, Aegon III Targaryen.
"House of the Dragon" continues to captivate audiences with its intricate power struggles and dramatic twists. As King Aegon II Targaryen's story unfolds, viewers can expect more intense developments and revelations in the coming episodes.
