KHC: Covid warrior Ganesh Warwade on being a male nurse, his love towards duty and why this pandemic is a litmus test for the medical field

The Frontline workers such as doctors, nurses and others have contributed the most amidst this Covid - 19 Pandemic. One such Covid warrior who recently appeared on Kon Honaar Crorepati is nurse Ganesh Warwade. He broke the stereotype of a nurse (sister) by becoming a male nurse (brother). Speaking about his duty, Ganesh shed some light on his dedication towards the job and how this public service gives him the utmost satisfaction. (PC -SS from the site)

"Public service is equal to service towards God"

Talking about choosing a job from the medical field, Ganesh said, "People always say that after the army if there is a profession that requires discipline and determination then it is nursing, and that is true. My father has also worked in the medical field. I have always learnt that public service means doing the service of God. There is nothing beyond that." (SS from the site)

Couldn't become an MBBS doctor

I could not complete my dream of becoming a doctor because I got lesser marks in my 12th exam so later I decided to pursue my career in nursing. I anyhow wanted to enter this field to help people. (SS from the site)

The job of a nurse

I feel, when the patient comes to the hospital, he gets stressed and more than the patient, his family always gets stressed. As staff nurses, we give the patient and his family mental support and calm them. Everyone panics when they reach the hospital and, we nurses try to make them comfortable and give them possible facilities. (PC - SS from the site)

"No bigger happiness than seeing a patient getting discharged"

There is no bigger happiness than seeing a patient gets discharged. When I see the faces of the families and the patients after getting discharged from the hospital, I feel so satisfied.(PC - SS from the site)

Pursuing a career in a female dominant profession

As a male nurse, I feel it is a little tough. People would say that this profession is for females and it is a female-dominant profession. People often feel that a nurse means a sister, but they should also now know that a nurse also means brother too. (PC - SS from the site)

"I still, remember when I wore the PPE kit for the first time. "

When the first COVID-19 patient came to the hospital, I remember I was having lunch. I got up in between and wore a PPE kit, and helped them to find their beds. It was the period when we were in the first wave of COVID19. It almost took 4-5 hours for all the paperwork and tests for the patients. I still remember when I wore the PPE kit for the first time and wore it for the entire day and when my shift ended, I went home. I removed my PPE kit, had no food and slept. It was the most depressing day of my life. (PC -SS from the site)

"The current situation is a testing time for the medical field"

When there is a general patient, then a patient's family and friends give support and make the patient mentally strong, but there is an entirely different scenario with a COVID19 positive patient. Now the COVID19 patient gets isolated in an area where no one from outside is allowed there. A few patients also get depressed because of the news and death reports. The current situation is taking the test of the medical field. It's also quite saddening that as a human earlier we would give support and boost to a patient if he or she is suffering from anything but now the scenario is different. (PC - SS from the site)
