People had told me horrifying stories about TV’s work schedules: Padmini Kolhapure
Film actress Padmini Kolhapure is set to make her telly debut. While she will play a parallel lead in the show Ekk Nayi Pehchaan, the fact is that she had been offered Poonam Dhillon’s role earlier. But the actress was not ready to do TV then. She says, “Since I have done films and theatre, I was keen on exploring meatier roles there than trying something on TV. I was offered the lead role here that went to Poonam.
But now, after seeing the show, I felt that it has a good storyline and I have known the producers Jay and Kinnari for a long time now. Even Poonam is a good friend and I have worked with Sooraj Thapar (the actor who plays Poonam’s husband in the show) in theatre. Many people had told me horrifying stories about the long work schedules on TV, so that was also one reason why I didn’t want to do television. But nothing like that has happened so far.”

So what’s her character in the show all about? “I don’t know. I can’t reveal much about the plot because then it would mean giving away the suspense,” she says.
About the current trend of very young actresses playing mothers on TV, Padmini says, “I played a mother in films when I was in my 20s, so I don’t see why a young actress can’t play mother on a TV show.”

On the personal front, her son Priyank is also gearing up to act in films. She says, “In our family, we already have eight people associated with movies and television. My husband (Tutu Sharma) is a producer, my son is looking for good scripts, my brother-in-law Shakti Kapoor is an actor and his children Shraddha and Siddhant are both in films, my sister Tejaswini has acted and her husband Pankaj Saraswat is acting in films and has been doing TV for a long time now. So, while everyone is stepping into films and TV in our family, I felt it would be great to try this medium too.”
