Navin Prabhakar on World Laughter Day: Memes can’t replace the magic of live laughter
On the occasion of World Laughter Day, stand-up comedian Navin Prabhakar reflects on how comedy is evolving in an era dominated by viral memes and bite-sized digital humour, while defending the enduring charm of live performances.
Known for his iconic characters and memorable punchlines, Navin acknowledges the impact memes have had on modern comedy. “Memes have undoubtedly changed comedy forever. They are quick, relatable, and reach millions within seconds,” he says, adding, “But comedy is not just about laughter. It is about connection.”
Highlighting the emotional and human aspect of humour, Navin emphasises that live audiences bring an energy that digital formats cannot replicate. He explains, “When you perform on stage, you feel the audience. Their laughter, their silence, their reactions shape your performance in real time. That connection is something memes can never replace.”
As social media continues to redefine how entertainment is consumed, Navin believes both formats can coexist. While memes cater to instant gratification and wide reach, stand-up and live comedy offer deeper engagement and more lasting recall. He adds, “There is room for everything. Memes are the new-age language of humour, but live comedy is an experience. It is raw, unpredictable, and personal.”
On the work front, Navin, who shot to popularity with his Pehchaan Kaun act on The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (2005), has been missing on TV for a while now. He has been busy with live events and corporate shows. He says, “I miss TV so much. TV gave us recognised glamour. However, nowadays, social media and TV go hand in hand. You can’t say which medium is more powerful. The TRP game and the social media followers game are very different, but the real kick comes from live laughter.”
He adds, “I am getting a great response for my live gigs and stage shows, and I enjoy it deeply. It gives you a direct, heart-to-heart connection with the live audience. Navin Prabhakar’s 3 Hours Comedy Night is a family-oriented show, and when the audience is laughing and cheering, toh zindagi jeene ke liye what else do you want? It is always the love of the live audience that matters, not TV or social media likes and followers.”
