Bihu party at home

Mahika is super excited to celebrate Bihu. She shares, " Each year, during Bihu, I call cooks from Assam and call my friends here in Mumbai for a Bihu party. However, this year I'm cooking all the Bihu delicacies by myself. I have seen and followed my mother’s recipes since childhood. So, I'm best at cooking vej dal, steam rice and grilled potato. I will also make pitha with coconut and gur."

Missing mom's achaar

This year won't be a grand celebration but Mahika plans to invite some close friends home. “I'm calling my mom everyday as I'm literally missing the pickle she used to make for me during this time. Bogri, amla, jaalpai; my mouth waters just thinking about these. When I was a kid, I used to wear Mekhela Chador and dance. I miss that. Also, Bihu festivities are very environmentally friendly, and I like that about the celebrations,” she adds.

Interesting trivia about Tusu

She says, "The festival is based on a folk tale about Tusu, the daughter of a King of Gujarat, who fell in love with a prince from Punjab. The lovers had to flee the wrath of a Mughal King who did not approve of the relationship. They managed to escape and marry, though sadly Tusu's new husband passed away soon after. The distraught Tusu couldn't face life without her lover and even she gave up her live. Several of the Tea-Tribes began worshipping Tusu as a goddess who symbolises kindness, virtue, love and sacrifice. Its an important festival of the Tea Tribes of Assam celebrated in the month of Maagh"
