Kiku Sharda opens up about the decline in The Great Indian Kapil Show’s viewership; says ‘We are Transitioning’
Kapil Sharma and his team has always enjoyed love from the audience for all their comedy shows. After enjoying a successful stint on television, Kapil Sharma and his team of Kiku Sharda, Krushna Abhishek, Sunil Grover and Archana Puran Singh moved to digital platform with their show. The Great Indian Kapil Show continues to stream on Netflix and over the last four seasons, the show has had some of the popular guests from Bollywood, music and Cricket. However, the last few seasons have witnessed a dip in the ratings and viewership.
A key member of The Great Indian Kapil Show, Kiku Sharda, who has been associated with the team for over a decade, recently spoke about his journey working with Kapil. He also spoke about how the team adjusted after moving to a new platform. He reacted to reports around the show’s falling viewership.
During an interview Mashable about the show’s move to Netflix, Kiku Sharda shared that shifting platforms has not changed their creative style or the way they approach the content.
He said, "We are transitioning or bringing the show to a new platform because they like what we do. So we continue working in the same zone. You don’t change your core style.
Kiku further addressed viewer's feedback about how the show no longer feels the same as its television version, he said the difference is largely due to audience habit and familiarity with the earlier format. "Earlier, people were used to watching us twice a week. Now we appear only once a week, so they might feel it’s less. I don’t know if that is the feedback. People are enjoying the show thoroughly and we keep getting responses from different places. I don’t think there is any difference," he shared.
In the same interview, Kiku spoke about his bond with Kapil Sharma, "Our relationship is based on mutual respect. We both have a lot of respect for each other. I love that guy. You see a lot of comic actors who have the burden to be funny 24/7. Kapil Sharma can get a joke out of anywhere and can be humorous all the time,” as quoted by The Indian Express.
He further added, “But if he is with his family, in a zone, or we are talking about something else, he is not a wannabe, not at all fake. When we used to do our wrap-up parties, Kapil would get on the stage with a mic and make everyone laugh like crazy.”
He even spoke about Sunil Grover’s mimicry of Aamir Khan, which made headlines. “The acts that he did in the end from Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Rajamouli, to Kapil Dev he is crazy. His detailing is on another level. I have never seen an actor get into that kind of detail and finesse. Sunil Grover has that!” he said.
Kiku is currently part of The Great Indian Kapil Show season 4. While the show airs it's fourth season, the team is already gearing up for season 5.
