Nancy Guthrie's disappearance: Timeline, key clues, and the desperate search explained

In the quiet Catalina Foothills neighborhood outside Tucson, Arizona, 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home in the dead of night on February 1, 2026, leaving her family, including daughter Savannah Guthrie, the 'Today' show's co-anchor, in anguish. Last seen when her son-in-law dropped her off around 9:50 p.m. the previous evening after a family game night, Nancy’s pacemaker disconnected from her phone at 2:28 a.m. Her phone, wallet, meds, and car were all left behind. Her children, Savannah, Annie, and Camron, issued tearful pleas on social media, begging captors for proof of life and offering to meet ransom demands in Bitcoin. Their voices cracked as they said, “We need you home, Mom, we’re ready to talk.”

Initial response and crime scene

Authorities sprang into action after Nancy’s family called 911 at 12:03 p.m. on February 1; they arrived by 12:15 p.m. They found blood on the porch, later DNA-confirmed as hers, and her doorbell camera was suspiciously removed. According to People Magazine and the NY Times, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department immediately treated the home as a crime scene, noting “concerning signs” of forced entry, and involvement of homicide investigators, given Nancy’s limited mobility. Search teams with K-9 units, drones, and helicopters scoured the area, but shifted to a criminal probe by February 2 as no voluntary departure seemed possible. The whole investigation was conducted by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Ransom note sparks frenzy

By February 3, TMZ reported cryptic ransom notes demanding millions in Bitcoin, some with deadlines that passed without contact. These notes had eerie details about Nancy Guthrie’s home and attire. The FBI vetted them urgently, arresting a Southern California man on February 5 for a hoax scheme after he texted the family posing as a captor. Although the authenticity of most notes remains unclear, the authorities intensified their investigation. Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed a forensic review in the matter.

Doorbell footage and further investigation

A major break came on February 10 when the FBI released a chilling 44-second black-and-white clip from Nancy’s doorbell camera, showing a masked, gloved intruder, armed with a handgun in a crotch holster, tampering with the device at 1:47 a.m. on February 1. The figure, estimated 5’9”-5’10” with average build, wore a distinctive 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack. Motion triggered at 2:12 a.m., but no subscription meant no full recording, according to the BBC. This footage provided the first visual of the likely abductor, prompting an initial reward announcement on February 5th of USD 50,000. Later USD 100,000 reward announcement. In addition to this, the FBI also conducted an extensive investigation on Wednesday, February 11, on the roadways in the Catalina Foothills, where Nancy Guthrie lives, Fox News and CNN reported. However, there is still no sign of Nancy Guthrie.

Leads, detention, and ongoing probes

According to CNN live updates and BBC reports, on February 10, a person of interest was detained after a traffic stop in Rio Rico, 60 miles south, with searches of a property and vehicle yielding no charges by February 11. By February 12-13, tips led to three detentions near Nancy’s home and a nearby property search, while black gloves were recovered. As of February 14, roads were briefly closed near her neighborhood amid intensified activity, but Nancy remains missing, her fate unknown despite multi-agency efforts, including those by US Customs and Border Protection. The family still clings to the hope that they will find Nancy Guthrie soon.

Children’s plea

In a moment that captured hearts worldwide, Nancy Guthrie’s children, Savannah, Annie, and Camron, shared raw, tear-streaked videos on social media (Instagram). Their voices grew thick with desperation and love. “Mom, we just want you home. Please, if you have her, send proof she’s okay. We’ll meet any demands, no questions asked,” Savannah pleaded. Her hands trembled as she spoke straight to the camera. These cries echoed the family’s endless nightmare. The posts came amid ransom deadlines. They showed a family clinging to faint hope. They stood ready to pay anything for one sign their spirited matriarch was still fighting.
