Film stars making the switch! From Debashree Roy playing lead in ‘Sarbajaya’ to Yash Dasgupta hosting a non-fiction show, Bengali TV enjoys a starry fever

Small screen has become the latest hot favourite for celebrities. The line between cinema and television is getting blurred. Stars who were once hesitant to feature on television are saying yes to TV to reach out to the masses. While Hollywood stars broke the ‘taboo’ comparatively early, Bollywood started following it a few years later. Big B Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Madhuri Dixit, Malaika Arora and many other stars gave a nod to the small screen realising its potential reach. Bengali entertainment industry is witnessing a similar scenario. While stars like Mithun Chakraborty, Srabanti Chatterjee, Soham Chakraborty, Ankush Hazra, Jisshu Sengupta were almost regular on Bengali TV, a few stars have joined the list recently. Interestingly, industry sources suggest, the trend of film actors turning to TV, has been ushered by lockdown. Abir Chatterjee, Adrit Roy, Aryaan Bhowmik turned to TV last year, Yash Dasgupta will be seen hosting a non-fiction show soon.
