Meanwhile, regular prayers are in progress at the Gangotri temple after it opened its portals in the middle of May 2021, following a winter break. Even though the shrine is open, no devotees are allowed to enter the premises due to COVID safety protocols.
The trek to Gangotri glacier in the higher reaches of the mountains starts from Gangotri. The route is 19 km long, and it offers the sight of Gaumukh, the origin of River Ganga.
