Bhopal’s two lakes are fed by the River Kolas, and are divided from each other by an overbridge. The Upper Lake (also known as Bada Talaab) is the bigger of the two, and was built in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj. The Lower Lake is located in the old part of the city, and was built by Nawab Chhote Khan in 1794.
The Upper Lake’s walkway is a great stretch to take in the views. The centre of this lake also has a dargah of a local Muslim saint known as Shah Ali Shah. Madhya Pradesh Tourism runs a boat club on the Upper Lake, which has facilities for sailing, paddle boats and motor boats. There is also a fish-shaped aquarium near the Lower Lake, with a large variety of colourful fish.
