Although the city of Calgary often gets Chinooks, it doesn’t mean that there is any shortage of places to cross country ski as many facilities can make extensive snow. Canada Olympic Park happens to be one of those places, offering 2.2 km of trails from December until March. They make a ton of snow in November that happens to last all season long. It also features the best facilities including rentals, warming huts and concessions. Shaganappi Golf Course is another popular spot in the city as Calgary Ski Club grooms and track sets 1.8 km of trails for classic cross country skiing. Located just outside the city though is where you will find the most snow and the best spots to take on this sport. Head to Kananaskis Provincial Park where Mount Shark, Pocaterra Ribbon Creek and Sawmill are all excellent options, or a little further to the Canmore Nordic Centre, a world class Nordic centre that has impeccable trails and offers incredible night skiing. They offer over 65 km of groomed, machine-made and natural trails with 6.5 km of them being illuminated for night skiing. Also, they have ski sales and rentals, lessons, equipment repair and guided tours.
