If you want to enjoy the best that the Alps have to offer, road trips should be your right option. Drive through tight corners, high altitudes, and zip along routes that hug mountain sides, here are some of the best road trips to take when in Switzerland.
Davos to Stelvio
A road trip from the ski resort of Davos to Stelvio will take you to one of the Swiss Alps’ famous roads, which is also considered to be one of the world’s best. Stelvio Pass, which features frightening 60 hairpin corners, will need you to be a skilled driver to manage the twists and turns at ease. Make sure you have a good day’s rest before you hit this road.
The Gotthard Pass
This route links up Andermatt to Biasca, and was once an important link for trade. Road trips became possible on this route since the beginning of the 1980s, when a 10 mile stretch of tunnel was built by cutting through the mountains. You’ll pass by the famous Devil’s Bridge in the Schöllenen Gorge along the way. This pass is also one of Switzerland's most famous hiking spots.
Montreux to Gstadd
It will be one of the longest yet the most fascinating drives as you will get to drive through terraced vineyards and beautiful orchards of Lavaux. Along the way, visit the Olympic Museum, click of Swiss plateau that is surrounded by the Sarine river on three sides. Then, you will pass through Greyerzer’s rolling green landscape, which is also home to the well-known Gruyère cheese.
The Furka Pass
This legendary Swiss mountain pass featured in the James Bond movie Goldfinger and since then, it has been a favourite among road trippers. A journey through the Furka Pass will take you to a high-altitude journey that will feature mesmerising views of mountain-top vistas, glaciers, and valleys. You can opt to travel from Andermatt to Gletsch (or vice-versa), and can stop along the way to visit the once mighty Rhone Glacier, which has been retreating at a fast rate.
