September is here and so are the beautiful festivals!
India, the land of culture and tradition, celebrates myriad colourful festivals in the month of September. Some of these festivals are famous enough to pull international tourists in large numbers. These beautiful celebrations are the true reflectors of Indian culture and create a wonderful surrounding.
September comes on a happy note, as the weather remains pleasant most of the time. A lot of holidays are lined up on the calendar this month. Let’s find out some of the most popular festivals celebrated in the beautiful month of September.
Ganesh Chaturthi (10th Sep)
Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most famous festivals, celebrated in India on a grand level. During this time, people bring Ganesha idols home and pray to the lord. Maharashtra and Karnataka celebrate this 10-day long festival in the most elaborate and grand manner!
Neelamperoor Padayani, Alappuzha (7th Sept)
This classic festival is celebrated in Alappuzha, Kerala, wherein the prime attraction are the massive colourful effigies. These are brought into the temple in a procession and put in front of the devotees. The procession is known as Annamkettu. It’s a fun celebration full of music and dance!
Naropa Festival, Ladakh
Naropa Festival, also known as the Kumbha of Ladakh will be celebrated this year. During the celebration, millions of Drupka followers visit the Hemis Monastery and perform rituals. The festival celebrates the life and teachings of Naropa, a scholar saint whose teachings also form the core of Buddhist learnings. The opening ceremony is grand and vibrant! Last time, the festival was held in 2018.
Abhaneri Festival (17th – 19th Sep)*
Celebrated in the village of Abhaneri, this festival is the best way to discover the beauty, culture and diversity of Rajasthan. During this time, folk dance and songs are performed by the traditional dancers. Kalbelia dance performances, Langa singing, Kachhi Ghodi dance, puppet shows and exhibitions are organised in the village.

Pitru Paksha Mela, Gaya (19th Sep – 4th Oct)
Pitru Paksha Mela is celebrated in the city of Gaya, Bihar. The celebration includes a ritual of paying prayers to the deceased loved ones. During this time, Gaya remains crowded with people visiting to perform Pinda Daan.
