Trains have been an important part of Indian history. On April 16, 1853, the first passenger train in India operated between Bori Bunder (Bombay) and Thane, covering a distance of 34 km. Then, in 1864, a station was built in Chandni Chowk in Delhi when trains from Howrah/Calcutta started running up to Delhi.Here are some beguiling historic pictures of Indian train travel and how it has changed over time.
