Immediately recognisable by its imposing ramparts, Purana Qila or “old fort” was built by Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century. Inside, there are beautiful examples of early Islamic architecture surrounded by peaceful lawns, such as the Qal'a-i-Kuhna-Masjid. The octagonal tower, Sher Mandal, is believed to have been Mughal emperor Humayun’s library and also the place where he died. The fort also has a couple of entertaining diversions for kids. The small lake next door is a scenic boating spot, while the neighbouring zoo is popular with families. The fort also hosts a sound-and-light show every evening.
