New Zealand is home to three species of penguin. The Korora (also referred to as the little blue penguin), are the world’s smallest penguins, and can be found in Marlborough Sounds, Akaroa Harbour, Oamaru and Stewart Island, where they come ashore at night. The rare hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin), is distinguished by its vivid yellow eye band and can be seen on the Otago Peninsula, just south of Dunedin and round the Catlins region. Lastly, the Tawaki (Fiordland Crested Penguin) is one of the world’s rarest, and most beautiful birds, and can be found in the South Island in rainforests of Haast, Lake Moeraki, Stewart Island and Fiordland.
