Planning a camel safari in the Thar Desert? Here’s what to know
Resham Sengar, TIMESOFINDIA.COM, TRAVEL NEWS, JAISALMER Updated : Jan 21, 2021, 19:13 IST
A handy guide.
Taking a camel safari in Jaisalmer is an unforgettable experience. Riding out into India's Thar Desert, then sleeping under the stars turns back the centuries to an adventurous time. Trader caravans and sword-wielding raiders once rode camels over the same dunes, towards the same desert forts.
How to choose a camel safari in Jaisalmer?
Go by word of mouth recommendations given by other tourists. Do not go by the suggestions given by touts that are usual on the streets of Jaisalmer. You can also visit a tour operator’s office to ask for worthy suggestions. Be specific about what you want.
During the camel safari
Ideally, a camel safari in Jaisalmer is meant for two days, with one night stay in the desert. Tourists spend a few hours on the camel back at a time, and then take a stop for meal breaks. Make sure you tightly hold on to the saddle when the camel is kneeling or standing to avoid getting jolted by the move.
Food in the desert
Rest assured, tourists are given delicious and freshly prepared meals, using raw ingredients made right in the desert. Be sure to inform your cooks in advance about the kind of food you would prefer.
Camping in the desert
Tourists are offered cots to sleep at night in the camps. They are also given heavy blankets to stay warm during chilly nights in the desert. If you would like to enjoy the experience of sleeping under the start-lit sky, opt for it.
Choosing the right clothes
The climate in the desert varies to both the extremes. So, pack in light clothes to cover you from the sun head to toe during daytime and light woollens for the cold evenings. Wear a pair of sunglasses offering good UV protection, which would not only protect from the harsh sun but also from the dust getting into your eyes.
Things to carry on a camel safari
While tourists are offered a lot of amenities to take care of their travel requirements, it is very helpful to carry a few essential items in a small carry bag. Pack in things like a sun protection lotion, sun glasses, scarf or hat, insect repellent, toilet paper, torch, hand sanitizer, some cash, light woollens for cold mornings and nights and waterproof cover for your camera.
Some good practices to follow
There is huge competition for work among the tour guides in the desert. So, if you have had a good safari experience, make sure you offer a tip to them along with a nice feedback in the log book after returning to the office. Also, do carry trash bags along to avoid littering in the desert area. And as it goes without saying, keep an eye on your belongings in the camp area.
