This is where it all began. Sit under the stars in any of the bars housed in the old buildings or go for a walk on the cobbled steps around the Maple Tree and listen to your local guide’s story of Gassy Jackson or John Deighton as he was called, a sailor and a captain of a steamboat. He came here in the 19th century and set up his bar called the Globe Saloon, the first establishment in the area. Jackson loved to tell tall stories and his nickname became ‘Gas’ and the area took the name after him while locals eventually built a statue here to commemorate him. Some of the buildings here date back to the 19th century, after they were restored after the Great Fire. The area is soaked in nostalgia and old world charm.
