Kolkata is a beautiful cultural city home to some finest and ancient Hindu temples. Each and every temple in the city has its own religious significance and is visited by thousands of people from across the globe. These temples have a rich and divine history, and are best in the country. Here is a list of some of the famous temples in Kolkata that you can visit when in the city next time.
Dakshineswar Kali Temple
Another most famous temple in Kolkata is the Dakshineswar Kali Temple. Set on the banks of the Hooghly river, the magnificent temple has its own religious and historical significance. The main deity here is Goddess Bhabatarini, another form of Goddess Kali. The architecture of the temple is simply splendid.
Kalighat Temple
Kalighat is one of the oldest and famous temples in Kolkata and in the country as well. This more than 200 year old temple is also one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India noted for its grandeur, historical and religious significance. As per mythology, the temple is built on the spot where Sati’s right toe fell during Shiva’s Rudra Tandava dance.
Thantahnia Kalibari
The temple was founded in 1803 by Shankar Ghosh and is considered one of the most sacred places to visit in Kolkata. Goddess Durga is worshipped here in the form of Siddeshwari. The place is known for offering a special prayer known as the Kali Puja which attracts thousands of devotees from every part of the city. The best part of the temple is its clay image of Durga which is changed every year.
Taraknath Temple
One of the oldest temples in Kolkata, Tarakhnath Temple is said to be built in 1729. The temple, in the town of Tarakeshwar, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and remains crowded with devotees throughout the year. On the auspicious occasion of Shivratri, it is impossible to find a place to even stand in the temple.
Pareshnath Jain Temple
The temple dates back to 1914 and has a huge religious significance. The temple represents the source of power and strength and features four sprawling gardens. The walls of this gorgeous temple are decorated with intricate carvings and the glass work done inside is also gorgeous.
