Coorg: A heaven for wildlife lovers
Coorg, a wondrous hill station in Kodagu district of Karnataka, is often referred to as ‘The Scotland of India’. The destination boasts of deep mountain forests which are home to some exotic wildlife. Enveloped by misty landscapes, the place is an ideal spot for nature as well as wildlife lovers. Coorg offers wildlife enthusiasts a lifetime opportunity to be with nature and explore all that it holds. The hill station alone is home to several interesting wildlife sanctuaries that can’t be missed.
Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary
The Brahmagiri sanctuary is a green dream! Located in the Kodagu district, within the Western Ghats, the sanctuary is nearly 250 km from Bengaluru. It was declared a sanctuary in 1974. The place is home to some exotic wild animals including elephants, leopards, sloth bears and tigers, among others. One can also camp inside and spend some time.
Nagarhole National Park
One the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in India, Nagarhole is known for its wide variety of exotic flora and fauna. The park is also home to some incredible waterfalls, valleys and hills that will leave you mesmerised. Animals like chital, sambar deer, four-horned antelope, Bengal tiger and Indian leopard can be spotted inside the park.
Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary
Another gem of a place in Coorg is Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary which is set on the Western Ghats. Surrounded by dense and evergreen forests, this place is renowned for its blooming flora and fauna and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One can plan a trip to this sanctuary but staying inside the park is not allowed.
Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary
Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary is a big space spread over 105 sq/km. The sanctuary also shares its borders with Ranipuram hills and Kottencheri hills in Kerala. One can easily spot Asiatic elephants, stripe-necked mongoose and mouse deer in the region.
