Meenakshi Temple
This temple needs no introduction. Counted among the most ancient and best temples in the country, this 6th century temple is visited by thousands of devotees every year. The place is also a popular tourist attraction in the city housing around 30000 sculptures. This historic temple on the banks of the Vaigai River is dedicated to the Goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her consort, Sundareshwar, a form of Shiva. Every year, various religious festivals are hosted here.

Narasingam Yoga Narasimha Perumal Temple
Set on the Yanaimalai hills, this temple is around 8 km from Madurai and is dedicated to Yoga Perumal. It was constructed in 770 AD which also makes it one of the oldest temples in the city. Narasimha Jayanthi festival is celebrated here annually.

Thirupparamkunram Murugan Temple
Another splendid temple in Madurai, Tirupparamkunram Murugan dates back to the 6th century and is dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is said that the Lord married Devyani, the daughter of Indra. The temple is also among the six major shrines of Lord Murugan in Madurai.

Solaimalai Murugan Temple
Another very famous temple in Madurai is Shri Solaimalai Murugan Temple set atop a hill. It is among the six major abodes of Lord Muruga of Madurai. The temple celebrates a number of festivals, which includes Tamil New year, Vaikasi Visakam and AadiKruthuka, among others.

Azhagar Kovil Temple
Located around 21 km from Madurai, this incredibly gorgeous and colourful temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here as Kallazhagar. Azhagar Kovil is a beautiful village with a rich history of its inhabitants. This Dravidian style temple is also one of the oldest temples in the city.
